![]() It also makes it possible to run a program on you computer that knows how to read the EXIF data and provide the same information.Ĭanon used to do this too. It makes it possible to get this count by uploading a JPEG image to a website that will read the EXIF data and show it to you moments later on the page. Nikon, Pentax, and Sony have put the shutter actuation count from their cameras into the EXIF data of photos. My preference would be to have the shutter actuation count in the menus of a Canon camera, but a close second would be if we could find it in the EXIF data in a photo taken using the camera. Photographers won’t be getting the shutter actuation count from the menus of their Canon cameras. The only Canon camera I know has this, or had this in some firmware in the past, is the Canon EOS 1D X. ![]() Unfortunately, Canon has very deliberately chosen NOT to have the shutter actuation count as information accessible in their menus. Seriously, it only makes sense that this would be there. You would think that the shutter actuation count is something valuable enough to Canon customers that Canon would put it in the menu of the camera. No Shutter Actuation Count in Canon Menus Let’s walk through the things that won’t work. Important enough you would think it would be something photographers could find out easily. Seems like the shutter actuation count is a pretty important number to be able to check on a Canon camera. This is the number of actuations the shutter is designed and warrantied to reach. Some shutters go well beyond these numbers while others don’t make these numbers. Note: These numbers don’t mean your camera shutter is guaranteed to fail at or near this count. Below is a table showing a lot of popular Canon camera models and the shutter actuation lifespan rated by the manufacturer. Incidentally, this is true of all cameras, not just Canon models. Some Canon cameras have a higher quality shutter built into the camera body than others. What Is The Lifespan of the Shutter On My Canon Camera? Photographers often want to know how much shutter life is left in the shutter for the camera they have, or more importantly, how much shutter life is left in a used camera they are looking to buy. Photographers care about this number because the shutter mechanism inside their camera body don’t last forever, the shutter wears out. Shutter actuation count is the number of times the shutter button has been pressed and triggered the shutter to release for taking a photo. Why Do Photographers Care About Shutter Actuation Count? But the fact that it rolls over fairly regularly and there’s no way of knowing how many times that rollover has occurred, does pretty well limit it’s usefulness for most purposes. This site is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates and Adorama Affiliate programs. We don’t know how that is retained exactly. Of course none of this necessarily means the shutter count is also lost in these situations. ![]() But after that one incident the XT3 also behaved perfectly from there on in, and survived various deliberate tests where I removed the battery later on, so it really did seem to just need a good charge to get going. None of my other Fuji’s, including the X-Pro2 I’d been using for two years had ever done anything similar. It freaked me out at the time as I’d also been very sceptical about the idea of an internal battery retaining these settings and assumed that - either way - there had to be something wrong with the camera. I actually swapped it for a second battery I already had charged, so it was next to no time without a battery, but all my settings had been lost and I was back to square one again. It was completely new, out of the box, I went through the setup etc for ten minutes and then realised I wasn’t going to get away without charging the battery. I experienced the “internal battery” issue with a brand new XT3 last year. ![]()
